Valdis Tomsons (born on the 25th of November, 1981 in Madona) is Latvian conductor and choral artist. He is an Artistic Director of the University of Latvia Mixed Choir Juventus as well as choirmaster and choral artist of the State Choir Latvia.
After graduating Madona high school in 1997 Valdis Tomsons continued his journey in Alfreds Kalnins' Cesis Secondary Music School, specializing in trumpet playing. He began his studies in Riga in Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music where in 2007 he received Bachelor’s Degree in choir conducting. Continuing his studies in Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music under prof. Romans Vanags in 2009 he received his Master’s Degree in choir conducting.
Artistic Director of the University of Latvia Mixed Choir Juventus
Since 2014 Valdis Tomsons is an Artistic Director of the University of Latvia Mixed Choir Juventus. Under his command, the Choir Juventus participated in and received awards in several National and International level competitions. With an amazing retrospective concert, the choir celebrated its 95th anniversary. During the choir’s dynamic performing lifestyle Juventus collaborated with both academic and popular music professionals, such as Armands Silins, Arturs Maskats, group Dagamba, DJ Rudd and many others. In 2015 Choir Juventus, along with the State Chamber Orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga led by conductor Normunds Shne and group Dagamba, implemented an unprecedented project in the Baltic States – a vibrant performance on the main stage of the very popular Baltic Festival Posituvus. Together with Choir Juventus Valdis Tomsons released such significant masterpieces as Ojars Vacietis Piano Concerto - music by composer Arturs Maskats, Frank Martin Mass for double choir etc. In April 2017, the Choir received Grand Prix and 1st place in Mixed Choir Category at the International Choir Festival in Montreux (Switzerland).
Choirmaster and choral artist of the State Choir Latvia
Since 2007 Valdis Tomsons works as a choral artist in the State Choir Latvia, later in April 2016, the position of the choirmaster was added to his responsibilities. In April 1st, 2017 Valdis Tomsons makes his first public appearance with the solo concert as the choirmaster of the State Choir Latvia. During his professional career with this choir, Valdis Tomsons has prepared such compositions as Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Missa solemnis by Ludwig Van Beethoven and few acapella pieces. As an artist and choirmaster, Valdis Tomsons has teamed up with such conductors as Stephen Layton, Johannes Prinz, Peter Dijkstra, Neeme Jarvi, Olari Elts, Zubin Mehta, Mariss Jansons, Andris Nelsons, Tenu Kaljuste, Risto Joost, Andress Mustonen, Maris Sirmais.
Valdis Tomsons has worked as a conductor in such mixed choirs as Burtnieks, Salaca, youth choir Balsis, and few more. He also gained his early professional experience working as a conductor in Madona Culture Centre Brass Orchestra. Under his command, pieces of such composers as Eric Witacre, Eriks Eshenvalds, Rihards Dubra, Emils Darzinsh, Emils Melngailis, Janis Zalitis, Rihards Zalupe, Arturs Maskats, Jekabs Janchevskis, Ola Gjeilo, Morten Lauridsen were staged by these amateur choirs.
· In 2007 Valdis Tomsons performs as a conductor at the premiere of Imants Zemzars Violin Concerto at Latvian Music Festival of Madona.
· In 2017 he again performs as a conductor at the debut of Juris Abols opus/compact opera Pokemontango performed by the State Choir Latvia.
